District VI – Lower Valley

District VI is generally composed of fertile, heavy-textured soil of alluvial origin with semi-tropic climatic conditions and bordered on the north by District VII.

District VI – Lower Rio Grande Valley generates a deep resonant unity and folklore along the border between South Texas and Mexico.  It features an area of astounding beauty, stunning biological diversity, complex, fertile ecosystems and abundant wildlife.  (Wild Life Corridor) It is a place where the magical blend of joy and the unexpected is commonplace.  Nine International Crossings span Cameron, Hidalgo, Starr and Willacy Counties.  Unique to this area are Sabal Palm groves (Sabal Palm Sanctuary).  A mosaic of irrigated agricultural lands cover vast sections of the Valley with cotton, winter vegetables, sorghum, onions, aloe, sugar cane and citrus.  The Fauna and Flora are mixtures of species typical of temperate, tropical, desert and coastal habitats, sanctuaries to the rare spotted ocelot, the majestic peregrine falcon, and multitudes of bird rarities including migrating songbirds.  This free spirited area is dotted with interesting Historical Sites, Birding Centers, and flamboyant, multicultural communities.  The Valley is an astonishing, captivating and an intricate web of life.

The District is dedicated to education initiatives and is proud to award The Ethel W. Spears Scholarship.  This is an annual award impacting ongoing conservation, civic improvement, creative landscaping, Horticultural and Agricultural Studies and many related worthwhile and purposeful educational fields.

The Julia Montgomery Rose Cup (Julia Cameron Montgomery b. 1875) is awarded in perpetuity, annually and alternately to Towns in District VI.  It is a coveted, exquisitely hand-fashioned silver cup in the shape of a rose – an astoundingly beautiful footprint of civic beautification and pride, in the Rio Grande Valley since 1935.

Annual Flower Shows take place in Brownsville and Harlingen.  Please call the District Director for information about joining a Garden Club nearest you.
